The treatment involves removing the infected pulp (nerves and blood vessels) from inside the tooth, caused by trauma, deep decay, or repeated dental procedures, and replacing it with a filling material. Since a root canal is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, we use special local anesthesia to ensure you feel no discomfort. To protect the tooth and keep it dry, a rubber dam is placed around it, preventing saliva from entering. Then, a small opening is made through the crown of the tooth, and the infected pulp is carefully removed. This process helps restore your tooth and relieve any pain caused by infection.
During the procedure, very small instruments are used to clean the pulp and roots of the tooth, both through the crown and within the roots. This space is carefully enlarged to ensure all bacteria are removed. Once cleaned, a special medication is placed inside the tooth to disinfect and soothe the surrounding tissues, promoting healing and preventing further infection.
Once the root canals have been thoroughly cleaned and shaped, Dr. Baker fills them with a biocompatible material to restore the tooth. This filling is secured with adhesive cement to ensure a complete seal of the root canals. A temporary filling is placed to close the opening, which will be removed during a follow-up visit when the permanent restoration, such as a crown, is applied to finalize the tooth’s restoration.
The entire root canal procedure is usually completed in one appointment and typically takes less than an hour and a half. Most of our patients are pleasantly surprised at the ease and quickness of the procedure.
Once your root canal therapy is complete, your original radiographs and a detailed record of the treatment will be sent to your dentist. Our seamless software ensures your dentist is involved throughout every step of the procedure. You may need to follow up with your dentist for the permanent restoration, such as a filling or crown. Your restorative dentist will determine the best option to protect your tooth.
